South Korean authorities have sent female police officers to frequently inspect public toilets because of public discontent over the issue of clandestine photography, and under South Korean regulations, buyers of spy cameras are not required to provide personally identifiable information, making it difficult for police to track the perpetrators behind these illegal devices. Shin Jang-jin, CEO of South Korea’s Incheon spy camera company Damoacam, is interviewed.
The industry has come under pressure over the past decade as some South Korean lawmakers seek to change that, co-sponsoring a bill that would force spy camera buyers to register in government databases, a proposal that has caused panic among camera retailers, including Shin Jang-jin.
Shin insisted that his gadget was useful enough to allow people to obtain evidence of domestic violence or child abuse, and told people that he refused to serve customers who wished to monitor women in toilets.
There are many other small shops in South Korea that sell spy cameras. Lee Seung-yon, a supplier and technician of electronic components in Seoul, South Korea, displays a mini camera part in his store.
